Volunteer Opportunities

Our school is in urgent need of teachers, either to work full-time or as supporting
teachers for the local teachers we employ.

You will be involved in teaching secondary-level students, planning lessons, training
and mentoring our staff. The average class size is 65 students and their academic
levels are different which adds another challenge besides the big number of students.

We also need people who can assist with school administration, construction,
gardening, sports and sewing projects and the planning and development
of any other project that could help us become self-sustainable.

We are primarily looking for qualified teachers, who have a degree and experience
in the subject they teach but we are willing to accept teachers with informal experience,
depending on their CV and ecommendations.

For other jobs, you should have practical experience of the area you wish to volunteer in.

Fluent English is a must and French is a plus.

Other requirements:
We welcome volunteers from all over the world, of all ages and creeds.
As we have already mentioned, the work in our school is most of the times very
challenging due to lack of funds, the big number of students and limited number
of teachers. However we have a beautiful and rich library, full of interesting books
and teaching material.

The majority of the children we accept in our school are orphans and come from
very poor backgrounds, so we hope our volunteers will be able to care for and
assist the students outside the classroom context as well.

Dates and length of stay
Volunteers are required during school terms which run from February-April,
June-early August, late August-November. Ideally, volunteers should be able
to stay with us for a minimum of three months.

Leisure time
In the weekends you will be free to relax and visit places of interest in the Masaka
area, or travel more widely in Uganda. The people in the area surrounding the
school are friendly and happy to get to know visitors.

We are near Lake Nabugabo and Lake Victoria, where you can watch the wildlife
or go to the beach. You can also visit the Catholic cathedral and burial place
of Friar Ngobya who was said to have miraculous powers.

What we can offer in exchange:

Accommodation
We provide free accomodation on the school's compound. You will be living in
2 rooms (if there are more volunteers the 2 rooms will be shared among them)
and we will provide extra-matresses and beds. The shower is inside but the toilets
are outside, right behind the house.

Food
During school hours you can eat with the children or prepare your own food, the same
goes for the weekends and evenings. We are not able to offer you a varied menu
(it will mostly be boiled beans and posho, a kind of polenta, fried or grilled cassava
and tea), so in case you don't like our food you are free to go to the local market and
buy your own stuff. The market is close-by in the village and the food there is very cheap.

Water
We will provide hot water for bathing every morning or evening, according to your
preference and boiled water for drinking.

Internet
Our internet connection is limited and slow, as in most villages.
You will be able to send emails and do research, but it will be more difficult
to skype, watch youtube or download files.

Health issues
As we don't have any big hospital close by, we strongly recommend you are in good
health when you come here. We have a nurse working for the school but we do
NOT have a doctor. You will have to pay for your own health insurance and also
pay for any other medical treatments  you might require.

Please keep in mind that we have extremely limited funding and we do NOT charge
our volunteers any fee. This is why we expect you to provide for yourselves.

Visa issues
To be discussed for every particular case.

Costs
You are responsible for paying for your own air fare, visa, medical and travel insurance,
and for leisure activities.

We do not charge volunteers any fees, although you are welcome to make a donation
to the school if you wish.

Travelling to the school
You can come to the school by yourself (there is public transport from Kampala) or can be collected from Entebbe International airport or Kampala. If we collect you, you'll have to pay for travel expenses.
